Sparkling Wine Series Part 2: Champagne Laurent Lequart
When you think of Champagne, very often you think of the two superstars: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But how about the third variety that rounds out the ‘Big Three’, Pinot Meunier?
🌶️ I like to call Pinot Meunier ‘the spicy sibling’: while Chardonnay lends greener flavors and bright acidity to Champagne, and Pinot Noir more red fruit & floral, Pinot Meunier is known for adding body, richness, and spice. It’s known as the ‘workhorse grape’ for a reason!
🤩 For a long time, champagnes made from 100% Meunier were seen as uninteresting. Not anymore! This wine from Champagne Laurent Lequart is a perfect example. Made from Meunier sourced from Vallée de la Marne, one of the main growing regions for this variety, this champagne is stunning: mouthfilling, rich, and spicy, with bold red fruit and citrus flavors, large bubbles, and a delightfully heady mousse. Did I mention it’s under $40 USD 😏? I have purchased countless bottles of this champagne and love seeing people’s faces light up when they try it for the first time.
